WordPress Camp Fraser Valley

WordPress

Hey Everyone,

So after the success of WordCamp Vancouver hosted at the Network Hub in Downtown Vancouver by Tazzu Networking Forums, somebody somewhere was thinking, “if Vancouver can pull this off, why not Langley?” Well if you missed out last time, or want to learn and network with fellow WordPress bloggers and developers, join us on July 16th for WordCamp Fraser Valley, hosted by BlueFur Web Hosting at the Cascades Casino in Langley. Like WordCamp Vancouver, this is a mini-version of WordCamps held in other major cities (spanning over a day or two), but it still promises to be a fun evening of learning and inspiration.

Here’s the shortlist of cool presenters: Dr. Raul Pacheco, Rebecca Bollwitt, John Chow, and Yours Truly. At WordPress Vancouver I presented on how to use WordPress as a CMS and create catalogues and mashups with the help of custom fields, and the feedback from the audience was great. However, I do think it was a little advanced for some of the blogging audience and so I’ve got a simpler (but still technical) presentation planned for WP Fraser Valley. I’ll be posting more details about my presentations in the coming weeks but in the meanwhile, click here to register for the event!-

Enjoyed your presentation - so informative, thanks. Also, I found it amusing that later on John Chow logged into his WP as “admin” :-P

    Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for your comment. Yeah that was funny! But truth be told, I still have that habit too.. I’m working on changing it on all of my WP sites now though.

I enjoyed your presentation as well!

Kulpreet i really enjoyed your presentation on security in fact I also added the index.php file (can be either .php or .html) into my plugins folder ;) Though i added a header redirection back to the main page if people try going to it.

Is it feesible to change the wp-admin folder to something different? On my non wordpress site I tend to make the admin folder not as obvious to people trying to get easy access you know? Or would changing the wp-admin folder really screw things up? I thought about looking over some more of the code (and I’ve gone though a lot of it) to see if this would be something that wouldn’t affect the operation to bad but would make it harder for someone to mess with.

    Hi Tyler and Danny,

Thank you very much for your comments!

Tyler - great to here that you have implemented some of the tips. I don’t think it is feasible to change the name of the wp-admin folder, because it is probably linked to in many of the core php files. However you can restrict access to it through the htaccess file.

Danny - Yes I will try to put up my presentation ASAP. Thanks for the reminder!

Today is the first chance I’ve had to stop by since the event. I wanted to thank you for the great presentation; I was glad to know I already had implemented most of your suggestions but did find some new ones that I’ll be putting into place this week. I hope I do get to attend the next event at which you present.

    Hi Gregg,

Thank you very much for your comment. Also thanks for the summary and link on your website! I appreciate your encouragement.

Not yet sure of the next event I’ll be speaking at, but the next event I’m working on (or just brainstorming at the moment) is a larger scale WordCamp representing all of BC, with multiple sessions over two days, similar to the WordCamps held in other large cities like San Francisco. Not sure when or where exactly it will take place, but there has been a very positive response so far and I’ll continue soliciting opinions and input to get the planning into full swing.
