WP.com seems to be nice because of their large network which provides insane number of backlinks for each tag you put ... and that is just for some 15$ per year .. Bad thing is that they have a strict TOS. WP on self hosted site is not that powerful .. a simple blogspot site can have better layout .. faster loading times and unlimited bandwidth .. more less than 10$ a year with complete freedom to do what ever u want to. as far at backup is concerned WP site is quite easy to create backup of I have used WP.com and WP .org ..
