Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen

Submitted by kulpreet singh on January 11, 2009 – 12:02 am22 Comments

Hey everyone, every month Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen, a non-partisan volunteer-driven project of the Sikh community, serves thousands of meals in a multi-day free open-to-everyone community kitchen in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside, modeled after the Sikh tradition of langar (free egalitarian community meal). You can take part by visiting GuruNanaksFreeKitchen.com or by emailing gurunanaksfreekitchen@gmail.com. They take place at the Life Skills Center on East Cordova Street.

The same project also operates a weekly free meals dropoff every Sunday evening. Meals are prepared at the Sukh Sagar Sikh Gurdwara in Queensborough (on Wood Street), and transported in a van and delivered by hand to people in the Main & Hastings area in Vancouver. You can email the same address above to volunteer.

I admire honorary office work a lot.
Unfortunately I can’t be a volunteer, because I live too far away.

I am very interested to come and help. That was a great idea. Thank you for the information that u post.

  • A great way to socialize, it seems. As a contributor, you might also sample, too, eh? We might well encounter some exotic submissions. It doesn’t really sound much like charity as a daily opportunity for community fun.

  • What a wonderful endeavor. This was posted in 2009, is it still ongoing?

  • Always big respect to people who help others like this :)

It’s so giving of you to start and volunteer for this cause. The world needs more and more people who are like these—they don’t build a name for themselves. They just keep enlarging their hearts and hands to touch a needy, fatherless generation. I wish I live nearer. Oh, well, let me know how can I support the group despite the distance.

I too applaud the selfless, generous-beyond-belief efforts of the team behind Guru Nanak’s Kitchen. When I think of all the lazy, bludging, good-for-nothing people out there who would rather sit at home, sucking up welfare to pay for their drug habits and giving absolutely nothing back to society…and then think about the truly inspirational humanitarian work that these people at Guru Nanak’s Kitchen are doing, it not only humbles me, but makes me ashamed that I too haven’t given enough.

As a guy who runs his own company, specializing in performing SEO tasks for Winscribe, a company that develops and markets digital dictation software solutions around the world, reading blog articles multiple times a day is par for the course.

But today, reading your post and then visiting Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen website — and then Googling all about it — I am ‘totally moved’ by it all.

    Thank you, Kulpreet :)

  • @Gavin Phelps…Wow! Love your comment! My sentiments exactly – although I probably couldn’t express it as well as you :) I must admit though, Gavin, you’re totally right about the extreme opposites in society. I think some of the people on welfare that ‘shouldn’t be’ ought to be forced to work at least 2 days a week in a place like Guru Nanak’s Kitchen – at least (to use your words) they’d be “giving something back”.

Hi there to the wonderfully kind-spirited folks at Nanak’s Kitchen. I recently found a video on You Tube featuring Nanak’s Kitchen and thought I would post a link to it for all who are genuinely interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4yJ40qU2do

Just copy and paste the link into your browser and you will see just what this blessed kitchen is all about:
